Mission Statement
To empower growth and create exceptional value through the seamless integration and collaborative strength of our diverse business.
PT Marconi Matorindo's journey is a compelling narrative of entrepreneurial vision and adaptability. Founded on November 15, 1990, in Batam, Indonesia, by Mr. Willian Ong, the company initially focused on importing cars from Japan, offering car reconditioning and rental services to capitalize on Batam's emerging tourism sector. This initial venture laid the groundwork for remarkable expansion across diverse industries.
1996-1998
From its inception in 1990, PT Marconi Matorindo (PT MM) established itself in the car import and rental market specialising in reconditioning used Japan cars. Recognizing Batam's potential for both industrial and tourism growth, PT Airbening, PT MM's development arm, was incorporated in 1995. This subsidiary undertook the construction of a five-story building and ten shop houses, providing commercial and residential space, notably for overseas staff of Oriex Corp. This foresight positioned PT MM to capitalize on the impending influx of businesses and personnel. A pivotal partnership with Oriex Corp in 1999 further propelled PT MM's growth. This alliance provided access to new markets and invaluable expertise, marking a significant turning point in the company's trajectory. Leveraging Batam's burgeoning industrial era, PT MM strategically positioned itself for substantial expansion within Indonesia's industrial landscape. In 2000, PT MM diversified into the trading and assembly of disposable match lighters for export to European markets. To accommodate this new venture, a larger assembly facility was planned, with construction commencing in 2001.
2004-2011
Despite the global economic downturn caused by the SARS outbreak in 2003, PT MM demonstrated resilience and strategic foresight. Recognizing continued demand within industrial sectors, the company strategically diversified into plastic manufacturing within the newly constructed assembly facility. Collaborations with suppliers in Singapore and China facilitated this expansion, enabling PT MM to offer tailored solutions to a broader range of industries. This diversification continued in 2011 with a dedicated venture into lighter manufacturing. Capitalizing on the growing influence of Chinese goods and trade in Asia, PT MM leveraged its existing plastic manufacturing capabilities to establish a new business unit focused on producing disposable match lighters. This strategic move solidified the company's competitive position and further strengthened its relationships with Chinese partners.
2012-2016
In 2012, PT MM expanded into the food and beverage industry, constructing La Kora Resto, a seaside establishment in Trikora Beach, Bintan, Indonesia, to cater to the increasing influx of tourists from Singapore. As PT MM's domestic operations expanded, the need for efficient logistics became crucial. In 2014, the company established a dedicated logistics hub in Jakarta, Indonesia's primary business and logistics center. This strategic move streamlined distribution across the country and significantly enhanced customer service capabilities. Further diversification followed in 2016 with an entry into the hospitality sector. Recognizing the booming Indonesian tourism industry, particularly in Bali, PT MM partnered with Furama Hotel International, a renowned hospitality brand in Southeast Asia and Greater China. By acquiring a property in Bali and entrusting its management to Furama, PT MM further broadened its portfolio and capitalized on the growing tourism market.
2022-Present
In 2022, facing the evolving corporate landscape shaped by the COVID-19 pandemic, PT MM underwent a significant restructuring, becoming the Marconi Matorindo Group of Companies. This reorganization established a new management board focused on strategic oversight and synergy across the various business units. Under Mr. Ong's continued leadership, the Marconi Matorindo Group aims to elevate each business unit to new heights. The group is currently focused on fostering strong relationships with Hainan, aligning with its master plan to become a free trade port by 2025. This strategic alignment positions the group for future growth and expansion in the dynamic Asian market. From its humble beginnings as a car import and rental business, PT Marconi Matorindo has evolved into a diversified conglomerate, demonstrating a remarkable ability to adapt, innovate, and capitalize on emerging opportunities. The company's story is a testament to strategic vision, strong partnerships, and a commitment to continuous growth and diversification.
